Ruby in the Well
Nona used to tell me this story when I was a little girl, and we'd act it out with a few toys she assembled for the purpose. Now I tell it to K at bedtime, and she asks for it every night.
When Ruby was a little girl of about 2, she was very fond of drinking from a bottle. One day, a little boyfriend of hers took her bottle's nipple and threw it down into a dry well. (What a naughty little boy!)
Ruby was distraught (because you couldn't just go to a grocery store and buy a new one, in those days). She loved that nipple! So, Ruby's father had the idea to put little Ruby in the bucket and lower her down into that small well so she could retrieve her nipple. Of course, Ruby's mother was anxiety-ridden, but her father said, "Oh, now, she'll be fine!"
So, Ruby's father put her in the little bucket and slowly, slowly lowered her down. Once down, she must have felt around and touched the nipple. Once she had it again, her father cranked her back up, much to her mother's relief and much to Ruby's happiness, to have that precious nipple back!
What a beautiful tribute to Nona. She would be honored.
Great work.
